Serpent Consulting Services | Kindness Keeps the world afloat : CSR activity by SerpentCS

Small acts of kindness come full circle and change lives. Money can do quite a number of things, but it can’t buy kindness.
SerpentCS does it again, sharing the happiness to the people around. We visited  the deaf and dumb students and distributed clothes and fed ice cream.

Failure - my observation, analysis and philosophy!

Oh Yes, you didn't fail to reach here! Our whole self-worth is so tied up in succeeding, that we don’t realise that failure is necessary to achieve anything of real value.

I know you are sitting there having just read the opening to this post saying, what the hell are you talking about Jay?

You would find this very unusual to read, but I like the feeling of getting failed sometimes. It just becomes a inevitable part of your journey when you enjoy even your failure. Failure is just your plan/wish goes unwanted! Your intended objective does not go satisfied, you call it failure! Failure is absolutely necessary. Failure means learning, but its more than just a painful lesson you have to endure. Failure shouldn’t just be tolerated. It’s something that should be indulged in, because failure is an amazing opportunity. Failure is introducing yourself first-hand to an aspect of your business or life that can be improved upon.

Thomas Edison discovered 1,000 ways not to make a lightbulb before landing on a solution. Einstein's dead-end job as a patent clerk freed up his mind to imagine what might lie beyond Newtonian physics. Failure is a great teacher, if you're a willing student.

The way ice cream comes in various flavours, but the base is always vanilla, failure is no more different from it. Failure comes is various modes, but the base is same, disappointment! And not to forget, this is the state of mind! We have heard many people saying, happiness is a state of mind, age is also a state of mind, why not the failure? If you mind it, you will feel. Let us just not recall Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who recently threw a statement - Poverty is a state of mind! :)

It would be difficult to come across anyone who hasn’t failed ever – at anything, or even anyone who doesn’t know what it means. And yet so many times we get hassled by this familiar experience, instead of leveraging it. Embrace it, leverage it and by all means celebrate failure, because it precedes luck, success and happiness most times. Failure also draws us closer to the truth, that we’re mortals; draws us closer to God and brings in humility and builds character.

Well, what I am talking about is, failure is an essential part of any success, including life, and we should not let it discourage us or scare us.
Instead we should embrace failure, failure is how business’s grow, failure is how writers become published authors, failure is how garage bands become signed world touring bands.

It seems I fail to attract you yet in the article! Though this makes me more cautious to write those contents which really pumps you up and motivate! In my completely personal opinion, there are following modes of failures!

  1. Failure in Relationship : One of the very rare failure for me as I guard a different nature to bow down and have a let-go thinking. But there are certain areas, certain circumstances where people fail to keep the relationship. In whatever relations I've failed, I tell myself that thanks to the relationship, you've learned more about yourself — what you can deal with, what you can't, and what you yourself need to improve on. You're a little more realistic about what's out there, and who you are.

  2. Failure in goals : Here comes an interesting fact that we do set goals, but we have to identify what kind of goal are they. Short term or long term? If short term goal fails, we can always take an alternate to reach out to the milestone to sail towards long term one. Without wasting a time and crying on why you failed, you have to immediately jump on thinking of an alternate and implement. If you just keep thinking, it will only be a thinking, rather you should act on it. If a long term goal fails, it becomes hard to come out of a shock as everybody can understand. But you are not everybody, you are a unique character. You would be counted special if you plan to use same energy, same achievement in a little different goal. Thus you would be utilising all your hardwork into a fruitful and alternatively similar goal. For example, you played a lot of cricket for your state team,but failed to get listed into Indian team. You should not stop, rather apply for the job of a coach, an academy, a sports company. Thus you utilise the roads you have visited, the skills you have in an alternate way. We can talk many exmaples of such a philosophy.

  3. Failure in Business : Recession is very motivating. I admit, I have failed heavily in my business plans recently, but that has give me more energy and motivation to redo the things with better plan. Due to this failure, I am slowed down a bit, I can sit down and think more deeply. It gives me more time to think for any future decisions to take. It gives me more ideas to implement, more tricks to adjust to whatever conditions, more products to work on, more contributions to do, more to read, more to explore on any topic. The way everything fails, this applies to business, as much as it applies to anything else in one’s life. We’re consciously trying to build this into the culture of our still budding company by acknowledging failure when it happens and rewarding in some form, quick failures. For failing quickly could save us a lot of time and money, so we can then fail somewhere else, until we figure what works. We’re still working on the stigma attached to failure, to remove the negative connotation and bring in a positive one.

"You can only find the strength of the iron to weigh a weight, only when it fails."

Celebrate Failure

It's time to stop hiding your failures and share them with the world! We know you've failed. Everyone has. But because most people are too ashamed to talk about their failures, they keep happening over and over to different people.

Ways to overcome and learn from Failure:
JD Roth has developed a system for responding to small mistakes. Namely,
  • Figure out what went wrong. When I make a mistake, I take time to analyze why it occurred. Lack of mindfulness is the source of many of my financial mistakes. Sad but true. Observe your mistake/failure as a 3rd person. You will get answers.
  • Make a plan to prevent the future failure. As you have burnt hands in the past, you can plan your next move well. If you are not going to face it again, you can guide others well and earn more respect.
  • View each failure as temporary and isolated. No problem is that bigger to break you. Count it as just a temp thing, isolate it and throw it out of your mind. I don't let small failures bother me is that I've come to recognize that all these tiny errors, while annoying, actually make me a better person. These little failures are the price I pay in order to find success.
If you have questions on my philosophy, feel free to write back a comment. I would love to discuss and have a chance to help anyone overcome a failure.

Finally, I love to fail, fail well and fail successfully.

Thanks,
Jay.

જીવન એક યુદ્ધ છે, જો લડાય તો...'જય' નિશ્ચિત છે, જો પડકારાય તો!

જીવન એક યુદ્ધ છે, જો લડાય તો;
'જય' નિશ્ચિત છે, જો પડકારાય તો!

જગ ખરેખર સુંદર છે, જો જોવાય તો;
થાવું મારે પણ બુદ્ધ છે, જો થવાય તો!

સપનાં આવશે જ, જો નીંદર થાય તો;
જરા ફરિયાદ તો કરી લઊં, જો સંભળાય તો!

અશ્રુ તો વહેશે મન, જો દુ:ભાય તો;
કાબૂ માં રાખજો જીભડી, જો રખાય તો!

વિચારો તો વ્રુદ્ધ બની જશે, જો માત્ર સચવાય તો;
અમલ માં મૂકવા જ માંડ, જો રચાય તો!

આકાર તો જ મળે માટી ને, જો ઘડાય તો;
જાળ ત્યારે જ બનશે કરોળિયાનું, જો એ પછડાય તો!

આગળ વધવાનું લખેલુ જ છે, જો પગ મંડાય તો;
હાર ગણાશે નહિં, જો ફરી ઉભા થવાય તો!

પ્રશ્ન છે તો ઉત્તરો પણ છે, જો જણાય તો;
સાવ સીધો જ તર્ક હોય છે, જો સમજાય તો!

સમજો તો અઘરૂં નથી, જો કળાય તો!
હજી પણ લખતો રહીશ, જો લખાય તો!

Amit Patel shows his trait at the Farewell day!

Amit Patel, my x-colleague; when you think/talk about him...it appears a tall, smiling, bindass, jolly and well-dressed image of a man. Yes this is Amit Patel.

I have been observing this guy ever since I know, probably since January 2008 as I was his colleague and he was supposedly reporting me.

On Jun 28, when I saw some very nice photoes coming out one by one, I planned to write a blog on the things one can learn from him. There are usually many traits one can learn from another, but followings are my personal calculations and completely my observations.

  1. Be Rude  : There are times, when you have to be rude. But here come conditions are applied. Never be rude to the loving ones. You have to be rude to those who do not listen to you! In order to make them listen to you and obey you so they follow the right path for the good of all, you have to BE RUDE. I know sometimes, Amit has been rude to many people. I realize its necessary to be rude to stick to truth, to prove your point right.

  2. Only Relations have power, not the money :
    You might have money. No doubt you can buy anything; but not the trust, not real friends, not the goodwill. This guy has is no short of money as you might know, but he is down to earth. You will never feel it from his thoughts. He believes in keep the relation going, doesnt matter he loses some money, he spends money.

  3. Learn to ignore, take it easy : Everyone has troubles, everyone has problems. No one lives a problem-free life the same way no software comes bug-free. You just need to learn which are the moments you should ignore. I have heard from someone from commentary box : "Sachin believes what makes you a better cricket in choosing what deliveries not to play". In life, there are situations you need simply to learn what is important and what is not. He enjoys each moment.

  4. Keep your surroundings alive :
    You should be a working clock and a talking tom! Its necessary to make your friends, colleagues, family feel your presence. If you don't make interaction with everyone, means you are egoistic , you do not care. This guy just meets everyone, makes fun of things, makes you feel light and you react to it. He feels no pressure of whatsoever is the situation.

  5. Treat everyone well : Even if you do not know someone, its your humanity and responsibility that you should treat the one well; and not ignoring the person, insulting the person just because you don't know him. I observed that Amit threw party to everyone and almost everyone contributed to the party expenses even if Amit has not talked to one. Many of them might not like the guy, but Amit doesn't really care. He believes in thanking. He just believes to do his preferred action if his action comes up with some fruitful result for the good of someone.
He is the personification, of 'its important to know how much you live, not how long you live' !

To see his pics of Farewell, go here.

Wishing Amit Patel a good luck for his future endeavors.

GOD bless you!

Thanks.

Export - Import Configuration in OpenERP 7

Hello readers,

As an OpenERP user or developer may some time need to data import and export possibly in Migration. There are several methods in OpenERP to server the purpose. In OpenERP 7, data import and export happen in client side so you do not need to have technical knowledge. If you are able to collect the data in a spreadsheet without much efforts;  ‘CSV Import’ will be a better solution for data import. Similarly data can also be exported easily as a CSV files. The CSV file format is a text format compatible with most spreadsheet programs (such as
OpenOffice Calc and Microsoft Excel), and is easily editable as a worksheet. The first line contains the name of the fields in the form. All the subsequent lines are data, aligned in their respective columns.

Here you can see how to configure IMPORT,EXPORT your data in OpenERP latest version 7.0. The importation of data into OpenERP has been completely redesigned as to enable much easier and transparent data import operations. Allow to IMPORT data you should unable “Allow users to import data from CSV files”

This option is in Setting -> Configuration -> General settings menu as shown below:

After enabling the “Allow users to import data from CSV files” option, the import option is available next to every create button from list view.

 If you want to export the data, the option you can find in list view ‘More’ option.

How to Import and Export ?

Export :
Its a very simple to Export data in OpenERP 7.0, you just select the data and click on export, open new wizard, you will select the fields that you want to export and click on export to file,
after Export it will create a .CSV file. Export option cannot be disabled by any configuration but you have to write a web module for this.

Import :
First you have to select data to import, after selecting data, you can preview right away, thus resulting in a significant gain in time. In previous versions of OpenERP, you had to reiterate the import when the initial one did not meet your criteria. Now after the system analyses the file content and provide indications in case of error.In case of errors in the original file formatting, OpenERP proposes you alternatives and solutions on how to structure your document.

OpenERP 7.0 version gives more file formating options when data importing.

import data form .CSV file.

NOTE:

You must include every field that is colored blue because those fields are required (unless you know that they get filled by default with an appropriate value), and also any other field that is important to you.

Thanks, Hope this post will be helpful to you.

Serpent Consulting Services

Lectures on IT, Management and behavioral Science at SerpentCS

We are the strong believers that More We Discuss, More ideas evolve, More we come closer to everyone and more we grow eventually.

At SerpentCS, we took the initiative to invite experts to share their valuable input with our employees. It will help them to cope up with global trends.

Management and IT

The First Lecture was about ‘Management & IT’,  was delivered by Kunal Mojidra who is an Assistant Professor at a Management College, Narmada. He agreed to present his insights at a very short notice. He has been generating MBA talents since last 3 years or so.

Employees were looking very much involved and interested in the interactive session. Kunal shared the strategy and Management lessons by giving some interesting examples of how well-known companies have been managing their services, how they faced failures, how they came out better and how they stood strong in their market positions.

We then organized a debate session with 2 teams on the topic ‘Engineering Or Management?’. That Group Discussion brought out a lot more abilities of each of the staff member of speaking, convincing and fun factor.

After the presentation, there was a discussion on why soft-skills are necessary in today’s professional environment. Senior Staff of SerpentCS also gave some useful tips that can be helpful in employee’s personal and professional growth.

Management of SerpentCS concluded that both the wings, Engineering and Management are important for an organization. When managed well both of them, Success is assured.

Behavioral Science

After the great feedback from the employees, SerpentCS management is encouraged to organize more experts lectures.

We had called up an expert from software industry. Our expert, Mitesh Soni, has experience for over 5 years in the field. He has been part of 3 different organizations. Last Saturday, he was our expert who shared remarkable points in Organizational Behaviour. It was a wonderful experience for all.

After the very interactive, enjoyable and a thought-provoking session, Mitesh Soni was given a medal and a memento.

Mitesh shared his feedback:

It was 2 AM in the morning on 1st June, 2013 when I came to know that I need to take one expert lecture on behavioral aspect of a professional; I politely convinced Jay vora that it would be sharing of an experience which I have gained in past few years and not the “expert lecture”.

When conversation started at SerpentCS, I could see exuberance and liveliness of young students who might have joined months or year back. Youth comes with uncontrolled energy and often we all young people learn with our daily experiences on how to control our energy in right direction.

We discussed how knowledge we possess becomes of double value when we have the opportunity of sharing it with others. There was a time in between where I learnt couple of things from the young professionals and they provided me various hints on which I should move forward which is not usual in this kind of discussions. Employees of SerpentCS were agile in nature and hence serious lecture was transformed into a creative discussion and we didn’t even realize it.

It was a pleasure to share experience with them on how teamwork is important, how your role is not limited to a task assigned to you when you are working in a team. We emphasized on the communication part and we all agreed that if you take responsibility for yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams. It is possible to be competitive and still respect each others’ abilities for a common goal – that is success of an organization.

Moral of the Conversation: Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Observe yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible. You are an observer of what you observe. Without a sense of urgency, desire loses its value hence desire more, help others; emotions, trust, communication, and respect are influential factors in success of a team and organization.

It was an experience which I will cherish for rest of life. All the best SerpentCS! Be a “Game Changer” in Open Source world!

We want our employees to be Global Citizens. We will groom them to be ready to take any challenge. Employees are our priced asset. Get ready Serpents, Way to go.

Thanks,
Serpent Consulting Services.

12 Things/Lessons you should learn from 'Angry Birds' !

Dears,

It's a Sunday time, after playing the role of cleaner and sweeper, I am moving to see my mobile whether it has any SMS/emails/Missed calls. I see nothing but an unclosed 'Angry Birds' game which I had left unfinished.

I am not really a game geek, game follower or fond of games really. To be honest, this is not what it should be. You should be playing games which has many advantages if you ignore the disadvantages. There are many, but mainly I like the most is 'Alertness'.  I'll annotate the other ones in detail once I get time to wrote on those. For now, I am very much focused and impressed by one game, 'Angry Birds'! I feel I am late to like this game. This game has taken the world by storms.

Recently I have been into the 2 games, one is Counter Strike, the credit goes to Vishal Rajpurohit and the other is Angry Birds, the credit of which goes to Husen Daudi. The latter is the one which has impressed me the most and I am learning many untold lessons after analyzing this game for more than 2 weeks.

When I am back to home at late night and when I finish my dinner (This is normally midnight of next working day), I spend 15-20 minutes for this game. This does not happen daily due to massive workload on recent work I'm into. Since last 2 weeks, I have been observing this game closely and I am learning many things / lessons from this game.

Doesn't matter you are a student, an employee, an employer, a sportsperson, a politician, an engineer, a manager, an unemployed or whatsoever profession you belong to; this game is going to teach you many lessons and will make you think about your abilities, your skills, your team's abilities and its potential. Please don't tell me I am doing a marketing of this game, I am just putting my experience and thoughts on paper. (But I would really love to marketise if they pay me ;) )

I have a good habit to find meanings in trivial and unique things. As I have read somwhere '1. Observation is the cheapest way to learn' !

=------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------=

There are many lessons we can learn from this game. My observations are here:

=------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------=

2. Never Giving up Attitude :
You are new to the stage, so you don't clear it on the first go! You try again, not all the stages are easy to go through and you don't give up. You are trying to kill the pigs and clear the stage min 5-10 times if the stage is little tricky. For easier stages, you might take min 2 attempts. Though, you have learnt not to give up even you failed once. Edison had failed 1000 times before finding the right approach to generate the light. Failures are the part of life. Trying again is the only alternative to quitting !

3. Being Calculative :
On the first attempt, you start the stage and start releasing your birds and try to destroy the pigs and buildings. At each upcoming attempt, you see the game closely and organize yourself to kill which pigs and section with which bird. Sometimes you have to hit the right brick with precision so it gives you maximum possibility to kill the pigs and demolish the buildings too, like hitting right into the base. This particular habit makes you very much calculative. You are now thinking twice before applying any of your steps/ideas into action. You can learn calculative risk taking too.

4. Break your own record :
Even if you've cleared the stage, if you are willing to finish as the superstar winner, you will still replay the stage until you get top score and get 3 stars on your name. This gives you a virtue of beating your own record in your performance. Doesn't matter you get success in your plans, you will still look within and say yourself that you can still do better! Don't compete with others. Compete with yourself, self-assess daily. You have the capability always to improve and do better. Comparing yourself with someone will simply be the insult of yours, your capabilities, your uniqueness.

5. Integrity :
"Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not." - Oprah Winfrey.
Doesn't this say it all? You simply do not play '2 player' here. Its only you. The battle is between your past and your presence. You always try to make the best use of your past and want to make your present better. You learn dedication here. You simply don't have any supervisor to observe your game but you still want to give your best shot in each release of bird. You become honest.

6. Be resourceful - Not everyone has the same skillsets :
You have played many stages, many versions. You very well know what a bird can do with an individual ability. The red birds are simple, stones are separated into 3 shots, Bomb birds are best for bricks and stone, the yellow birds are speedguns, the eggdropping birds are useful too. Same way as a Leader if you think closely, each member of your team has different skills and shortcomings. Learn how to best engage them accordingly. You cannot ask a fish to climb the tree. Utilize the skills of your members well and get them into action at the right time. Using the red bird to break the whole building is a useless dream. People succeed best when their unique talents are recognized. Always highlight the talent of an individual, rather pointing to one's mistakes repeatedly. Different problems require different specialists.

7. Be Creative and experimental and then Strategical :
It's very obvious that you will not hit the pigs right on first throw. You have to try various times, but wait...not the same patterns, approaches, but a different one each time. You try the same things differently when you face failures. Do experiments, there is no limit of no. of attempts. Each failure gives you a new dimension to learn and gives you the opportunity to rethink the strategy.  A partial success will boost your moral and you will now plan your attacks well.

8. You can’t recover from a really bad start :
You know the game well now. If you don't start well, it will be hard for you to recover. This is just like the game of cricket, if your openers do no give a good start in powerplays, you seem having hard time scoring big.

9. Be Goal-Centric and have a core objective to achieve at least efforts:
Like the Arjun of Mahabharat, eye only to the target. Only see the pigs and find loopholes in the building to reach and hit the pigs hard. While you might be having a number of resources, as a manager you must always think about achieving your target with the minimum resources. In Angry Birds when you do so you get three stars, called an appreciation.

10. There are more than one ways to win :
You can kill the pigs in multiple ways by deciding which one to kill first out of the ones you see. You can always get the plan executed in multiple ways. You can always look for possibilities to reach to the target. If it looks hard or impossible, break down into multiple possibilities. More options you explore, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

11. If you enjoy, you will succeed :
Love what you do, do what you love. No doubt if you dedicate some time for your goal, no one can keep you away from success. Managers have to involve everyone in workplan and have to manage to keep the environment alive by some little fun and prank to keep the interest of everyone in the plan. If you are engaged well into your goals, you delivery the best always!

12. Celebrate each win :
When you clear a stage, isnt your confidence doubled ? You celebrate. When you complete the subtask, task, or a little assignment, its necessary that you celebrate the victory. This not only gives you a feeling that you are right on track, but also gives an insight to the team that they can surely achieve. Separating a big task into milestones and celebrating after each milestone will enhance your positivity.

Huff...how much have I written?  Guys, we can still write more on this.
Lets cut this short for now.

I am sure this post will make you a more positive, a fighter and a winner in your problems. It should create a leader in you and if you are a leader, you will become better.

Hoping for the best things to happen for you.

Your feedback will surely be my food for the next post on motivation!

Thanks,
Jay Vora.
