OpenERP : Manage transactions online with EDI

At OpenERP we are constantly developing nifty features to make your life easier. OpenERP v6.1 will include a great feature: B2B/B2C exchange of invoices, sale orders and purchase orders, called EDI.
- OpenERP Team.

What is EDI and what's its purpose? In short, EDI (electronic data interchange) has the purpose to simplify and make more efficient the interactions between companies. Instead of sending a bundle of papers to their customers or suppliers, companies can execute their transactions online.

Whether you are working with OpenERP or not, EDI will allow you to export and import specific OpenERP documents between OpenERP instances and 3rd-party systems.

Let's look at an example: ACME Systems accountant validates an invoice for Agrolait, which triggers an automated email notification to Agrolait. See below:

In turn, Agrolait will be able to:

  • print his invoice

  • push / synchronize this invoice in his own management software

  • pay the invoice online (using paypal or other payment methods)

Accounting, Sales and Purchase modules are integrated with the EDI. So, from these modules you can directly generate a document and email it. It's up to you to customize your email notifications.

Agrolait can push this invoice in their own management software through 3 solutions. See the screenshot below:

First two options are directed to the OpenERP users. Option one is pretty straight forward and by clicking it, Agrolait automatically imports the invoice into their own database. Second option permits them to create a new instance in case they don't have one already and wish to continue working in OpenERP. Consequently, after they have created their OpenERP instance, the invoice will automatically be imported.

Third option allows 3rd-party applications. So, if your customers or suppliers use a different application than OpenERP with the EDI it is very easy to extract data. See aside a sample of the code.

Last but not least, you have multiple ways of paying online, as the company is the one that configues the payment methods. For example, Paypal if you already have a Paypal account or bank transfer. OpenERP believes that this will close the gap between the clients and their suppliers by helping businesses worry less about payment logistics.

This feature will be available in our release of the v6.1.

Your Company Is Your Product; Get People to Do the Right Thing

“You will have meltdowns on a regular basis. You will have those moments. Make sure you have people you can talk to when you have those moments.”

That was Brad Feld, the tech entrepreneur-turned-venture-capitalist, on Friday afternoon, speaking to a room of Boston and New York entrepreneurs and angel investors, at an event organized by Silicon Valley Bank. The setting was the Microsoft NERD center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA. Feld was talking about the experiences that all founders (especially CEOs) go through with their companies.

Feld is the co-founder of Boulder, CO-based Foundry Group and TechStars, the seed-stage startup accelerator with programs in Boulder, Boston, Seattle, and New York. He relates very well to early-stage tech entrepreneurs, because he’s been there and done that himself. In his typical style, Feld spoke casually (and candidly) about the challenges of building a company. None of it was particularly earth-shattering, but it’s interesting to revisit these sorts of tips every once in a while, because different things jump out at you at different times.
Feld’s advice boiled down to two things: products and people.

1. “Be obsessed about your product.”

“The most important thing to focus on, early in the life of your company, is your product. In year two, it’s your product. In year 20, it’s your product,” he said. “If you focus on your product, most of your other problems will go away.”

But he has a broader definition of product—it’s not just the software you release, or your technology, or even your interface with customers. “The whole of the company becomes the product,” he said. “The whole lifecycle of what you do.”

That means entrepreneurs should be totally passionate about what they are building—not just starting a company to be their own boss, say—and they should be true to themselves. Feld admitted that with his first company, he got bored after four years. “I didn’t love the thing I was doing,” he said. (He sold it after seven years.)

2. “You cannot motivate someone.”

“The idea that a CEO can motivate people is a fallacy. All you can do is create an environment where people are motivated or not,” he said. Companies will make bad hires—talented people who aren’t a good cultural fit with the rest of the team—and they should get rid of those employees quickly, according to Feld. “You can’t change them,” he said, and you can’t “try to motivate people to work harder” through things like performance reviews. That simply doesn’t work, at least not for small startups.

Instead, founders need to continually make sure they are bringing on the right people for their team, communicating openly, “building the language of the company,” and tying that formative context and culture very closely to their product, he said. This will mean very different things for different companies, and it’s certainly not an exact science.

Feld said he sees a common mistake in young startups. “The CEO ends up doing a lot of the work,” he said, and “the non-CEOs don’t do the right work.” The CEO’s chief responsibility, over time, is to make sure “everyone is doing the right thing.”

Oh, and one more responsibility: “Don’t run out of money,” he said.

Respect for Hashim Amla !!!

Hashim Amla (SA batsman) is currently ranked as number one Batsman in ODI Rankings. I remember well that Dean Jones called him a 'terrorist' and Dean was sacked/fired by Ten sports!!!

Hashim Amla does not wear a Castle logo on his cricket shirt, said that he did not pocket a cent from his match fee.

Promoting beer & liquor is against the teaching of Islam and as such Amla became the first player to be the exception. who was granted permission by South African Breweries and Cricket South Africa not to wear the Castle logos on his clothing.

"Since Hashim understands his religion well, his beliefs are staunch and knows what is right and wrong. At the outset he made the decision not to wear the Castle logo on his clothing, which went public, and at the same time he also took the decision that the money earned from the Tests, sponsored by Castle, were forbidden for his use".

Your religion is clearly important to you but just how much?

The importance of my religion has increased as I have got older. I couldn’t put a time frame on it but I have found that following the Islamic way of life has a lot of beauty to it. Although I was born into a Muslim family I wasn’t always practicing. The more I have understood the differences in the various faiths I have adopted as much of Islam as possible. I’m certainly no saint but the discipline of the Islamic way of life has helped my cricket without a doubt. I don’t drink and I pray five times a day, which gives stability to my daily routine.

Can you tell us about your background?
I come from a small town 40 kilo metres north of Durban. I played a lot of sport at primary school like cricket, soccer, tennis, table tennis. I was brought up in a predominantly Asian community but I later went to Durban High School, which had a good sporting heritage and my Dad encouraged me to go there and paid the fees for me to go. Fortunately after the first year I got a bursary as I was good at sport and got looked after.

Hashim Amla has a habit of walking off the pitch when he feels he is clean out and he doesn't wait for umpire's decision.

Linking OpenERP to CUPS printers: base_report_to_printer by Agile Business Group

Introduction

OpenERP users often require the possibility to send reports to system printers, in order to print the reports on paper directly.
In OpenERP 5, this functionality was implemented by prinjob module. It provided several functionalities, one of these was to automatically send reports to CUPS printers. After the release of OpenERP 6, the module stopped working. At that point, one of the printjob’s authors said that he wouldn’t have ported the module to OpenERP 6, so many users was left empty-handed.
Recently, I’ve picked up the issue again and, after having analysed the problems of porting printjob to OpenERP 6, I decided to realize a module that would have extrapolated the most important functionalities of printjob and better adapted to printing methods of OpenERP 6. So, base_report_to_printer was born.

Configuration

The base_report_to_printer module is downloadable from apps.openerp.com or directly from our code repository. Once you installed it, the Printing menu will appear.

First of all, you have to load CUPS printers in OpenERP. You can use a wizard that retrieves them automatically. You just have to click on Update Printers from CUPS and printers will appear within the available printers list.
In the next step you will configure the reports to send to the printers.

Through the report form you can define the system’s behaviour while producing the report.

You can set a global behaviour, or differentiate it according to the user who’s printing. In the example, the global behaviour defines to send the report to client directly (Send to Client), therefore without sending it to the printer. But if user elbati is printing, the report will be sent to the selected printer (Send to Printer).

You can also define a default behaviour associated to the user, in order to establish whether a certain user, when not differently set, wants to send the reports always to a specific printer or not.
After finishing the configuration, you will just have to click on printing button associated to the report (or launch the report by a wizard or whatever) and the system will automatically send the report to the previously set printer.

Happy printing.
