US lawmakers suggest Barack Obama: Dump Pakistan and go with Incredible India

WASHINGTON: Expressing apprehension that the United States is being "taken for suckers" and "looked at as patsies" by Pakistan, two American lawmakers on Tuesday called for strengthening ties with India even as a White House report gave a harshly critical assessment of Islamabad's effort to defeat extremism.

While administration officials defended Washington's support for Pakistan using the same logic as London is doing on UK Prime Minister David Cameron's ongoing visit to Islamabad ("a difficult partnership with Pakistan is far better than having a hostile Pakistan," one U.S official testified), lawmakers wanted a major reappraisal of U.S outlook for the region. They expressed doubts if any good would come out of the current U.S policy of coddling Islamabad in the face of Pakistani duplicity in combating extremism. Instead, they pushed for even closer ties with India.

"After 10 years of hearing the same sales pitch I tend to doubt it. I doubt that our money is buying anything that's deep or durable," New York Congressman Gary Ackerman said at a hearing. "I doubt the leaders in the Afghan government and the Pakistani government are going to do anything except pursue their own narrow, venal self interests. I doubt the ISI will ever stop working with us during the day and going to see their not-so-secret friends in the Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e Mohammed and other terrorist groups at night."


His California colleague Dana Rohrabacher went even further back to frame the situation in a historical context. "I've been hearing that for 50 years. And I will tell you, a realistic relationship, rather than basing the relationship on wishful thinking, is what will bring about peace in that part of the world. What we've had is wishful thinking and what I call irrational optimism," he said at a hearing called to assess U.S foreign policy priorities in South Asia.

The critical comments came just hours after a White House report to Congress concluded that after years of work with the Pakistani military "there remains no clear path toward defeating the insurgency" that thrives in the country, remarks that analysts said reflected growing frustration in the administration over Pakistan's commitment to fight extremism.

Still, administration officials defended Washington's outreach to Pakistan, insisting that the country is vital to US national security interests and suggesting the U.S had no other options.

But lawmakers were not convinced. Both Rohrabacher and Ackerman, who described U.S ties with New Delhi as the "one shining light" and "brightest light" respectively of the administration's foreign policy pressed for greater emphasis on India.

"I would hope that we have the intelligence to work and to make sure that India is our best friend in that part of the world," Rochrabacher said, offering his contrast between the two countries. "The fact is that Pakistan is committed to Islam...India is dedicated to prosperity for their people."

Amid what lawmakers saw as Washington's compulsive obsession with Pakistan, Ackerman in fact criticized the administration for not using U.S diplomatic leadership and agenda-setting capability to focus global attention to the threat to India from Pakistan-based terrorists, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.

"If there is, God forbid, another Mumbai-like strike, we will not be able to say that we did our utmost to prevent it because in truth, we haven't," he warned. "The ambitions of these terrorists have only grown and a full-fledged global campaign to crush these thugs still awaits at our peril."

While critical of Pakistan, the White House report offered no new prescription of how to handle Islamabad, aside from reflecting on the well-known fact that India looms large in the Pakistani military's thinking.

"As India continues to dominate their strategic threat perception, large elements of Pakistan's military remain committed to maintaining a ratio of Pakistani to Indian forces along the eastern border," the Presidential report to the Congress on Afghanistan and Pakistan said, adding, "This deprives the Pakistani COIN (counter-insurgency) fight of sufficient forces to achieve its 'clear' objectives and support the 'hold' efforts."

ICC Cricket WorldCup 2011 : India-Australia Quarter Final Match Experience : March 24,2011

Akash Oza and I witnessed one of the best matches of ICC worldcup 2011 which ended up in the close finish. The match was full of milestones for different players.

The India Vs. Australia match was quite equivalent οf Brazil vs Germany οr Italy vs Argentina іn a football World Cup a high voltage contest. Sο team winning thе toss was lіkеlу tο hаνе bat initially аnd рlасе thе opposition under pressure bу putting up hugе score οn thе board.

Its India vs Australia quarter final world cup 2011 οn motera pitch ahmedabad guys, and I was among those lucky ones who could manage the tickets.

We all were kееnlу awaiting GOD's 100th century(please don't ask me who the GOD is, shame oon you if you ask so).

An epic battle waѕ expected between four time world champion Australia аnd one οf thе tournament favorite India wіth both team.

Finally, we reached at 1PM sharp and took a seat. The Sun was very much bright and we faced HOT waves badly.

Few metres away, there was a media box and guest room from where commentators and guests watch the game LIVE. We just had reached and were waiting for the toss and I suddenly moved around and saw Little Master Sunil Gavaskar chewing tobacco(Akash said its Manekchand or Rajnigandha). I stood up and pointed with a shout 'Hey Sunny, ho.....' and the whole stand went crazy. We got a good response from him and in no time, we saw Tom Moody, Ravi Shashtri, Sanjay Manjrekar, Ian chappel. Meanwhile, toss was won by Ricky Ponting and we were supposed bowl.. and came Sunil Shetty and appeared in guest box with an unknown(atleast for us) guest.

The crowd was cheering up for Sunil Shetty and were waiting for the match to begin. And I tell you, they watched the whole match live and we used to cheer every wicket of Australia. People came in various attires and most commonly Indian team t-shirts to add some spice to the game and the atmosphere as a result.

And Finally, the match started with new ball given to R Ashwin. As the match progresses, the crowd was cheering every ball and shouting many slogans like 'Sachinnn...Sachin.. tap tap tap', 'Jitega bhai jitega...India Jitega', 'Ponting haay haay', Loosers, cheaters', 'India...India... tap tap tap', and many 'oooooooooo......uuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh' and showing finers and hands to Aus cricketers when they come up to Indian batsmen while bowling.

In my opinion, the match turned slighly to India when Zaheer got the wicket of Mr. Cricket (Michael Hussey) who is an outstanding cricketer of recent times.

Meanwhile, we saw DADA, Saurav Ganguly in the media box for the commentary.

The Warne moment

“Sachin Tendulkar brought the full house to its feet by coming on to bowl the 30 over. Having bowled a full toss on his second ball, Tendulkar might have given the Aussies a false sense of comfort. His next delivery was a perfect slow leg break, straight out of Shane Warne's book. The flight was perfect, luring Ponting to come out, but then it dipped and then it turned square, leaving Ponting, the Indians and the 45,000 fans gasping. “

 

But Ricky pointing was very much determined and rock solid on ground and continued attacking despite of falls of wickets at the other end. He completed his century in the 45th over. He is the only man next to the GOD in most runs in ODI(nearly 5000 runs). Reaching to another century is no doubt a big milestone for him as he is moving near to the GOD. Ponting countered him by shuffling to his right and working the ball with the turn. When he was tired, he had to face the reverse-swing from Zaheer. In the middle, he picked Ashwin's carom ball, and mixed caution and aggression against Yuvraj Singh. 

A Little note: In the break of AUS-ZIM match, I got a golden chance to meet Legendary Gujarati Music composer shree Gaurang Vyas.

We finally got a target of 261. The first over started with a lot of woooos and uuuuhss as we got Viru little stumbled upon for an appeal of getting caught behind to Lee. It was truly a dream to see the GOD batting like a machine and playing orthodox copybook shots including the viru-related uppercut which went for four to Shaun Tait. In the very next over, Lee bowled 150.0 KPH bowl to the GOD and he drove straight to Cameroon white for no run. Additionally, almost every bowler bowled a wide with same style!!!

The GOD completed his half century in style and sooner was out. He reached to a milestone of 18000 untouchable runs.

Indians played well with the bat and we lost wickets but only with batsmen contributing well to the total maintaining the average of almost 5. Gautam Gambhir reached to the milestone of 3900 ODI runs.

Yuvraj completed his 8000 ODI runs.

India required 93 runs from 101 balls at that stage when we had lost 4 wickets, but they slipped further into the abyss as MS Dhoni got out after looking edgy. He nearly got involved in a run out, had a big swing and a miss against Lee and perished next delivery, cutting to point to leave India needing 74 from 75 balls. It was then that Yuvraj decided to play the World Cup innings of his life.

The batting Powerplay was the final hurdle, but Raina, who gave admirable support to Yuvraj after Dhoni's exit, walloped the first ball from Lee over long-on and Australia's fight evaporated with that shot. Till the end, both the left handers played their role and made India win the match. Look at the way Yuvraj roared after the winning shot. Now we will play against our most awaited opposiotion Pakistan at Mohali for 2nd semifinal.

Harikari of the day

Two overs, four balls, three run-out chances. India needed 94 with six still standing, Ricky Ponting, who could hit a bulls eye wearing a pirate's patch a year ago, squandered the first juicy chance. Yuvraj Singh tapped Mitchell Johnson to the leg side, straight towards Ponting at midwicket. Yuvraj was disinclined to sprint, but his partner Gautam Gambhir was already out off the blocks. He was turned away by Yuvraj, was left stranded out of the crease, but Ponting who failed to pick up the ball cleanly, and when he did, his throw missed by inches.

Two balls later there was more. Yuvraj played all over a fastish David Hussey delivery, and the ball rolled towards the unmanned leg side. Gambhir screamed for a single. Yuvraj, disinterested initially, started and stopped. Gambhir twisted and turned. But Brad Haddin, who had rushed to collect the ball threw to the wrong end. Gambhir, who was left stranded for the second time, walked back to safety. Amazingly the duo had another absolutely identical brain fade off the very next delivery. Gambhir was left stranded and fuming, and this time the Aussies made sure they were not going to let the Indian pair escape. Gambhir walked off shaking his head in disgust and mouthing abuse that would have horrified a few million parents watching with offspring for company.

My Personal note:

It seemed like AUS bowlers had no way to get our left handers out.Even Gautam Gambhir was a run out. :)

I don't Want to be Sachin - Harsha Bhogle after Ind-SA WC2011 Match

Remember when you failed an examination. How many people recall that, your class, friends, relatives? You failed to make it to the IITs or IIMs. Who remembers. How many times have you had the feeling of being the best in your class, school , university, state….., you failed to get a visa stamped this quarter…, you missed a promotion this year…, how did it feel when you dad told you in your early twenties that you are good for nothing…..and now your boss tell you the same...



You keep introspecting and go into a shell when people most of whom don’t matter a dime in your life criticize you, back bite you, make fun of you. You are left sad and shattered and you cry when your own kin scoffs at you. You say I am feeling low today. It takes a lot from us to come out of these everyday situations and move on. A lot??? really?



Now here’s a man standing on the third man boundary in the last over of a world cup match. The bowler just has to bowl sensibly to win this game. What the man at the boundary sees is 4 rank bad bowls bowled without any sense of focus, planning or regret. India loses, yet again in those circumstances when he has done just about everything right.

He does not cry. Does not show any emotion. Just keeps his head down and leaves the field. He has seen these failures for 22 years now. And not just his class, relatives, friends but the whole world has seen these failures. We are too immature to even imagine what goes on in that mind and heart of his. That’s why I would never want to be Sachin.



True, he has single handedly lifted to moods of this entire nation umpteen number of times. He has been an inspiration to rise above our mediocrity. Nobody who has ever lifted the willow even comes close to this man’s genius. His dedication and metal strength is unparallel. This is specially for those people who would have made fun of him again last night when India lost. They are people who are mediocre in their own lives. Who just scoff at others to create cheap fun. Who have lived in a small hole throughout their lives and thought they have seen the oceans.



Think about the man himself. He is 37 years of age. He has been playing almost non stop for 22 years. The way he was running and diving around the field last night would have put 22 year olds to shame. The way he played the best opening quickies in the world was breathtaking. He just keeps getting better which is by the way humanly impossible. Its not for nothing that people call him GOD.

But still I don’t want to be in those shoes. We struggle in keeping our monotonous lives straight, lives which affect a limited number of people. Imagine what would be the magnitude of the inner struggle for him, pain both mental and physical, tears that have frozen with time, knees and ankles and every other joint in the body that is either bandaged or needs to be attended to every night, eyes that don’t sleep before a big game, bats that have scored 99 international tons and still see expectations from a billion people.



And he just converts those expectations into reality. We watch in awe, feel privileged.

Well I think its time that his team realizes that enough is enough. They have an obligation, not towards their country alone but towards sachin. They need to win this one for him. Stay assured that he himself will still deliver and leave no stone unturned to make sure India wins this cup.

This is not just a game, and he is not just a sportsman. Its much more than this. Words fail here.....
